Rudyard Kipling's poem, 11 The Lesson,’’ has caused much irritation among English leaders, and will not increase his popularity or i)is literary reputation. He is reported to have written another poem in which he attempts to mets out rough-and-ready justice to various British generals. Those who have seen it in manuscript Jo not look for its publication soon. Kipling is a strong military partisan, and is thoroughgoing in his contempt for Alaershot fussiness and red tape. He expresses colonial and Imperial rather than British opinion of military failures during the week.
In France the spell of fine weather has brought about an improvement in the appearance of the crops on the stronger classes of soil, but on the iight lands tee’ cereals have suffered from drought. Reports from the agricultural districts are accordingly very variable in tone. In Normandy and Brittany the prospects are hopeful, but in Champagne, Beauce, Brie, midland districts they are less encouraging.
