The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, AUGUST 26, 1901. OUTBREAK OF ANTHRAX.

Tub County Chairman is deserving of the warm thanks of evoryone in the district for the prompt steps taken in regard to the outbreak of anthrax at Opotiki. It would indeed be a very serious thing for the whole colony if the dreaded disease of anthrax once got a firm hold, and at the meeting held a much stronger resolution than that adopted would not have been out of place. The Government should at once not merely take stringent measures to prevent the spread of the disease to this district, but should take effective means to have the cases stamped out. It is alarming to thimc that it should even be suggested to drive stock from the affected parts to this district, but apart altogether from any such local danger, the Government should promptly and effectively deal witli the outbreak. The time would certainly be better devoted to a subject of this kind than to the farcical financial debate, over which so much time is to be wasted. The Government has now an oj)portunity of showing the utility of its stock departments, and their action in this matter will be watched with interest. If there should be any delay in the matter, wo hope that the settlers of this district will again meet and back up the resolution adopted. The subject is so serious that the activity—we are sure it will not bo inactivity—of the Department will need to be closely watched.
