FOOTBALL.

OTAGO DEFEATS NEW SOUTH

WALES.

By Telegraph —Press Association. Dunedin, last night. The football match, New South Wales v. Otago, was won by Otago by five points to nil. The weather was beautiful, and the ground was dry and in good order. The attendance was large, probably eight thousand. The game was pleasant to watch and exciting, Losing the toss, New South Wales had to play against the breeze, which was at times gusty. The local men made the play open, but it was not till the end of the spell that they scored. Duncan kicked to the centre, and Smith snapping up the ball, scored, Bennett converting the try into a goal. Changing ends Otago made the game close, and for some time had the advantage. The last few minutes were very exciting, New South Wales attacking, and a score seeming probable any moment, but for the time being against them. The visitors put in some prettypassing, and had all the best of the scrum work, but the Otago players were superior in the open, while there was a great improvement in the backs. Tlie game was played in excellent spirit.

[Notes cy “ Tub Whistle.”]

The senior banner fixture, Kaiti v. City, sot down for Saturday last, did not eventuate. The exertions of the Rugby ball of the evening before appeared to have been too much for the players. Only some oight or so City men rolled up at 3.30, and the officials of the club decided to forfeit tlie match to Kaiti, who were also several men short. A short practice game was held, but tlie play was of a feeble description, and the men all seemed to have “ that tired feeling.” No chargo for admission was mado at thc’gates. Next Saturday should see one of the most exciting contests of tlie senior competition. Huia, who have 10 points on for the banner, play West End, who have 8 points to their credit. As Kaiti also have 10 points on the slate, a victory to West End next Saturday would have the effect of placing those three clubs level for the championship, with two matches to go—West End v. City and Kaiti v. Huia. A most interesting finish to the struggle for the senior banner should be witnessed.
