RUGBY UNION BALL.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Tub Theatre Royal last evening presented a gay and attractive appearance on the occasion of the Ball, held under the auspices of the local .ltugby Union. The Committee had been preparing for the function for some time past, and their efforts were rewarded with the utmost effect, the being pronounced by one and all to have been a great success. The hall was elaborately decorated, and the scene whilst dancing was on was a gay and animated one. The interior of the hall was one blaze of bunting, whilst the pretty banners of the several football clubs and the collection of photographs on the walls afforded a pleasing contrast. A number of mirrors hung at intervals round the dancing room added to the general effect. Prominent among the flags was the Union’s handsome Cambridge blue silk banner, whilst the banners of the West End and Turanganui Clubs wore also much admired. Included in the collection of photographs was one of the Cambridge University team, showing Messrs Arthur Rees and Arthur Holdship, of Wellington, as the half-backs of the j team. The supper tables were most artistically decorated in the colors of the several clubs, and were laden with all manner of good things in the way of eatables, kindly given by the lady friends of the footballers. The idea of having separate tables for the several districts was abandoned, but the ladies rivalled one another in furnishing delicacies for the tables. The supper was an excellent one, and certainly did the ladies credit. For this happy state of affairs credit is due to the following members of the divisional committees, which wore formed to make arrangements for the bail :—City : Mcsdames Parker and (Dr) Williams : Misses McCabe, Miller, Adair (2), Buchanan (2), Maclean. Huia: Mcsdames ■ A. W. lieos and Mann ; Misses M. Roes, Staite, Mason, Monckton, MeCredie, Quccuin, and Williamson. Haiti : Mesdames L. Rees, Maude, and Harding ; Misses Bright, Cooper, Jones (2), and Butt. West End : Mosdames Nolan and Skeot : Misses Macfarlane, Bennett, Shcrriff, Gray, Campbell, and Evans (2). The decorations were carried out under the supervision of Mr J. Adair, who was ably assisted by Messrs W. Miller, L. Sherriff, A. W. Adair, 11. Bright, Nolan, MeCredie, and 11. Symcs. A special word of praise is due to Messrs W. Miller, President of the Union, and A. W. Adair, hon. sec., for the manner in which they worked towards assuring the success of the hall. To Mr Adair more especially the thanks of all footballers are due, for he was most untiring in his efforts to promote tho'uomfort of all present. The floor i was in good order for dancing, having been carefully prepared by Messrs Webb and Jackson. Messrs A. F. Kennedy, W. Webb, A. Rees, and A. Sawyer officiated as M.C.'s, whilst splendid music was supplied by Mrs Fernandez and Messrs Massey and J. Ormond. The attendance at the supper tables was all that could be desired, Messrs Miller, Hawkins, Symes, Sherrill, C. Adair, H. E. Dodd, W. Duggan, It. Caulton, and A. W. Adair giving great assistance in this direction. Dancing lV£ts commenced shortly after eight o'clock, and was continued with spirit until an early hour this morning.
