The Colonial Press.

(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —I agree with your correspondent, Mr J. Peckover, that too much prominence is given by tho press of tho colony to subjects that tend to debase and not improve mankind. In support of this contention I have only to instance the prominence the Times devotes to sporting. Almost every race meeting in the colony is fully reported in your columns to the sacrifice of much more readable matter. It cannot be said that the reading of these reports, excellent as they may be from a racing point of view, are ealouluted to improve the youth of the colony, aud I am sure you would do well to pass them over and devote tho space to scientific subjects.—l am, eto., F.R.E.
