A SPECIAL MEETING ASKED FOR

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. An application has been received by the Primate. Bishop Cowie, asking him to call a special meeting of the General Synod, to deal with matters connected with the Poriruu and other church estates, which demand immediate attention. Further applications are expected, and if the request be complied with the Synod will meet on the l'2th prox.. at Wellington.

Herald’s Wellington correspondent telegraphs the following sensational item of news : Merchants here are closing up all bad and doubtful accounts amongst their clients throughout the country in anticipation of a time of depression. There are also considerable clearances at the Customs house, in I view of the Premier’s statements regarding the financial position of the colony, and the mysterious telegram “ from a correspondent ’’ in a Southern paper. The latter, which itisgenerajlyundersvoodcaino either directly or indirectly from the Premier himself, hinted at some readjustment of the tariff and an iuorease of the graduated land tax. On being asked by a Northern journalist the other night if the statements made were accurate, the Premier sent word that that was practically what' he had stated, except in regard to the alteration in the Customs duties.
