A considerable sum was raised in the room, and it was intimated that the Cabinet would give a joint donation to the fund. A committee was appointed, with power to add to the number, to carry out the necessary arrangements to suitably commemorate the memory of tho late Sir John McKenzie by a memorial or otherwise. Alajor Steward was elected permanent chairman of committee, the Hon. Lee-Smith treasurer, and Hon. Air Rigg secretary. A proposal made by tho Hon, Lee-Smith that the memorial should take the form of a cairn to bo erected on tho top of Puketapu hill, near Heathfield, was generally approved. It was also suggested that a bust of the late Sir John AieKenzie should be placed in the Parliamentary lobby. It was decided that the prominent public men in other parts of the colony bo approached with a view to their names being added to tho committee, so that tho memorial should be a national and not a Parliamentary one.
