A PERILOUS VOYAGE.
DISABLED STEAMER DRIFTING TOWARDS THE ROCKS.
AN ANXIOUS TIME,
[By Telegraph Press Association.] Auckland, last night,
Tho s.s. Glenclg, which arrived at Onehunga from Ilokianga yesterday, lmd a rather exciting experience on the passage. There was a heavy gale blowing from the south-west, with a heavy sea, and shortly after leaving Kawena an accident happened to tho machinery, which disabled the steamer, leaving her almost at tho mercy of tho wind and waves. The steamer was in such close proximity to the Maunganui bluff that tho breakers could be plainly seen, and the steamer was gradually being drifted towards the shore. A horso box was put overboard to act as a sea anchor, but had little effect, and it seemed that the vessel would go ashore. After an hour’s anxiety she was brought out of her perilous position by tho aid of sails, and temporary repairs having boon effected below, the steamer made her way under sail and easy steam to Onchunga.
