Cribb’s Death.

TIIE FATAL BOXING MATCH,

Sydney, July ‘24. On Monday evening a boxing contest took place at the Gaiety Athletic Hall, Oastloreagh-strcot, between two wellknown boxers named Otto Cribb (otherwise known as Alfred Simpson) and Michael Dunn. A largo crowd of spectators was present. In the ninth round Cribb failed to respond, and Dunn was accorded tho victory. It is stated that Cribb boxed against the advice of his trainer. Cribb subsequently loft the hall with his trainer, William McCarthy, and after walking across Hyde Park, they entered a tram from Bondi. On arrival there they proceeded to their lodgings at Cliff House Hotel. It is stated that McCarthy gave Cribb i sponge bath, alter which Cribb lay down on the bed, and apparently went to sleep. Ilis companion, so as to be ready in ease his services wore required, lay on the bed alongside Cribb, and before midnight fell asleep also. McCarthy awoke, however, about 5 , a.m., and being unable to rouse bis companion, procured assistance, Dr. Ludlow was called in, and after examining Cribb, pronounced life extinct. The police were informed, and a report of the occurrence was furnished the Coroner. Defendant was years of age. and came here from New Zealand about two years ago. Whoii Cribb first catne oi'er’from New Zealand, ho took up his residence at Parramatta, where his brother was residing. His desire was then to perfect himself as a boxer, and ho gave one or two private exhibitions in Sydney, but his not thought to bo-good though. However, one old Sydney champion thought that he was a barn champion, and stated (hat it would not be long before he would be amongst the top flight of light and middle-weight boxers.
