A very successful social was held at Mohaka on July stli, given by the bachelors. The dance was held in Mr Lindsay’s woolshcd, kindly lent by him for the occasion. The shed was most artistically decorated with flags and evergreens. Messrs Brigktwell and Pearce made efficient M.C.’s. About thirty couples put in an appearance, in spite of the unpleasant weather. Songs were sung by Misses Keefe and Pencpcn and Messrs Hcslop, Silce, Pearce, and Brightwcll, and Mr K, Mclvor entertained the guests with some humorous recitations in his well-known style. Great credit is due to the joint secretaries, Messrs F. Gardner and M. Mclvor, who carried out the social to such a successful issue, one and all returning homo quite satisfied with the evening's enjoyment. 11 is with considerable regret that X have to record the death of Louis McKcehnie of Frascrtown, which occurred on the 2ord of July, 1901. About 18 months ago he left with the Fifth Contingent to take part in the present war at South Africa ; to help defend the Motherland against the Boers, and during that time took part in several engagements and came off unscathed. On his way home “poor fellow,” thinking no doubt of the happy meeting of father, mother, brothers, anu sisters, to say nothing of his numerous friends, he was taken with that fatal scourge “ enteric fever” when a week or ten days out from Capetown, and lingered on until he arrived at Dunedin, from the ship he was taken to the hospital there, his many friends still hoping that ho would recover, but alas it was not to be, and he died as above-mentioned, regretted by all he had over come in contact with. Great sympathy is felt for his parents in their sad bereavement, and the whole population of this district will tender condolence to Mr and Mrs McKcehnie and family. A memorial service will be held on Sunday the 2Sth inst at St. Andrew’s Church, when it is expected a full muster of the volunteers and friends will take part, j Telegrams state that the service was largely-attended and very impressive.]
