Humane Society.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, last night,

The annual meeting of the Royal Humane Society was held to-day, Colonel Slater presiding. The annual report stated that two years’ working fully proved the wisdom of the establishment of the society in New Zealand, The suggested amalgamation of all Humane Societies in the Empire was favored. Twenty-four awards had been made during the year, consisting of four silver and two bronze medals, four certificates in vellum, and fifteen letters of commendation. In several instances a very high quality of heroism had been shown. The directors had continued the issue of lifesaving charts, and also distributed five hundred copies of the first annual report, which contained valuable information in reference to saving life. They were of opinion that the time had arrived for formulating a scheme for making awards for proficiency in theoretical knowledge of tho art of life-saving from drowning, to pupils of all public and private schools in the colony, on the lines adopted by the Royal Humane Societies of England and Australasia. Tho statement of accounts showed a small credit balance, Sir John Hall was elected President, and the Mayors of Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington, Auckland, Napier, Invercargill, New Plymouth, Hokitika, Westport, Timaru, and Qamatu were elected vicePresidents.
