The Auckland Star states that probably pressure will be brought to bear on the Government this season to establish up-to-date steamers between Wellington, Picton, Nelson, the West Coast and Marlborough. The Wairarapa Times did not take kindly to the military display at Christchurch. A slashing article concludes thus: "As it was, the whole thing was wasteful, improper and ridiculous. No Government but one run on “ show ” principles would have done such things. If the democracy do not take care to put their emphatic protest on record against all these tawdry, blaring, bombastic doings—well they deserve to bo gulled.” One of the best managed societies in Australia is the N.b.W. Sheepbreeders' Association, says the Farm and Daily. It lias but one object, and that is the per footing of sheepbreeding in Australia. Many societies cater for the public by side shows, which arc altogether apart from the business in hand ; they bring revenue to the societies but they also bring discredit to them. Another thing that the Sheepbreeders’ Association sets itself against’ is allowing its otlicial luncheon to be turned into a political stumping ground for the Ministry of the hour. Members of the Lyne Government turned up last year, and because the then Premier and some of his henchmen were not to be allowed to turn the event to their political advantage they left in high dudgeon, Still the Council was firm and the association none the worse for showing a firm front on the occasion. Seeing that the society does not make any money by encouraging sword swallowers, fat women, palmists, spielers, and other parasites to prey on visitors to the show, and sticks strictly to the business of offering prizes for sheep, exhibiting sheepbreeders’ appliances, and having sheep dog trials, every sbeepbreeder in the country should be a member. Some breeders of 120,000 sheep and upwards are not members yet the subscription fee is the lightest trille to them.
