Pernicious Legislation.

NARIEL PROTESTS. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Napier, last night. A largely - attended meeting of employees 'of wholesale warehouses, merchants. and offices was held this evening to discuss the proposed Shop and Offices Bill. Mr T. C. Dawson being voted to the chair. The following resolution was carried unanimously : •• That the employees of the wholesale warehouses, merchants, and offices of Napier, view with alarm the legislation in the Bill now before the House, namely, the Shops and Offices Act. 1901, having reference to the hours and overtime of wholesale warehouse employees: on the following grounds (a)' That the suggested fixed hours wall entail considerable more hours of labor annually than the existing arrangement : fbl that the warehouse and office employees at present work under such conditions that any of the suggested changes are for the worse ; (c) that the said employees would strongly deprecate any legislation on their behalf, being perfectly satisfied' with the' relations at present existing between their employers and themselves."

A petition embodying this resolution is being prepared for presentation to the House of Representatives and Legislative Council.
