THE WELLINGTON RACES. (Special to Times.! Auckland, last night. Great interest was taken here in the Wellington races to - day, well-known sportsmen down to Auckland street arabs in ventilated pantaloons dealing freely in speculation. I understand that tho bookmakers in Wellington are following the example of tho totalisator and paying out on the first and second horses on tho ratio of 75 and 25 per cont. of tho total dividend. This is also being done in some oases in Auckland, whilst in others I hear that the bookies are paying only on the first and adding tho 25' per cent. It is the general opinion inf sporting circles that the new departure "adopted by the totalisator in paying on the first and second horses will tend to increase the volume of betting.
