ARE THEY IN EARNEST ?

(To the Editor of the Times.) kiR, —I have read a great deal in your paper of late regarding the position assumed by Crs Lysnar and Whinray upon tho question of wator and drainage for Gisborne, and I must confess that I am compelled to doubt both gentlemen’s sincerity. ' It appears to me that neither of them want water and drainage, and are doing their best to damage whatever littlo chance the poll lias of being carried. Cr Whinray seemed proud to pose as tho unbelieving Thomas of the Council, and no matter how pleasant a schemo wero placed before him he would reject it. Cr Lysnar is much concerned about the rivers being kept pure, and gives us yards of matter about water and its impurities. I have read all the up-to-date works he quotes, and am familiar with the rivers ho refers to. They are fresh water rivers, not salt water streams such as the Turanganui. Mr Mestayer’s proposal to drain into tho river below low tide is a right and proper one, and not the slightest exception can be taken to it. The quantity of matter to be carried into the river will not be groat, and can in no way be deemod injurious to health. I voted for Councillors Lysnar and Whinray at last election, and I must admit that I am very much disappointed with the position they have takon up in regard to water and drainage.—l am, etc.. Progress,
