Fire at Waimate.

NARROW ESCAPE OF INMATES OF WAIMATE HOTEL.

Bv Telegraph—Press Association. \Vaimate, last night,

Tho Waimate Hotel and several shops adjoining were burned down this morn- - ing. No ono in the hotel was up, and tho inmates had barely time to escape. The fire started in tho hotel kitchen, but tho cause is unknown. Nothing was Baved except the privato papers of the licensee. Most of the goods were got out of the shops adjoining. Twomey’s insurance on the hotel was £BOO, and £4OO on the stock and furniture. The other insurances on the places burned were : Franklin, stationer, £405 ; Meyers and Jones, butchers, £IOO ; Tukster, hairdresser, £7O. Williams, shoemaker, was uninsured. Fortunately there was little wind ; otherwise other places would have been burnt. The hotel building was about the oldest in Waimate.
