Opera for Gisborne.
(To the Editor of the Tijies.) Sin, —ln yesterday morning's issue “ Musicus ” asks why some effort is not being made to induce the Mnsgrovc Opera Company to visit Gisborne. Now there are several good reasons why wo are not likely to have the pleasure of a visit from Mr Musgrove’s Grand Opera Company. Ono reason is that it would cost over dEISO to land the company hero for ono production. Then I understand the prices in the four centres are to bo 6s, ss, 3s, and 2s. These prices will perhaps seem very high, but they arc lower than in Sydney and Melbourne, where Mr Musgrovc charged 7s Cd, ss, 3s, and 2s, and the theatre was packed to the doors night after night. In January last I saw three of the productions, and on each night many of those present wore glad to pay 5s for the privilege of standing. To lovers of music the Sydney and Melbourne productions provod a genuine treat. The night I hoard Tanhauser was indeed a momorablo one. The theatre was literally packed with the most enthusiastic audience it lias ever boon my lot to fall in with. It was certainly a beautiful production, and the house (with almost everyone in evening dress) presented a brilliant sight, and although the thermometer registered somewhere about 90, time after time the whole audience rose and cheered the performance, the conductor and orchestra receiving special attention. Now, I am afraid our town is a bit too small to find enough “ lovers of music ” who arc willing to support such a big show. With comic opera (however deplorable it may seem to “ lovers of music ”) it is quite different, as I am sure you will always find double the number willing to pay for opera bouffc. Of course, I may be making a mistake, and should a considerable number of theatre-goers wish it, I for one, would be willing to communicate with Mr Musgrove’s manager. —I am, etc., W. Miller.
