In an article dealing with tho Federal Defence Bill, the Paris Lo Temps describes what it terms consoviption. It regards the proposal of Australia as a revolution, and adds : “ Tho London Times commends to the Motherland the initiative of tho democratic colonies, which have tho honor of commencing tho militarisation of tho Anglo-Saxon world.” France is forming a reserve squadron of four battleships, one cruisor, and one torpedo destroyer at Toulon, aud is adding four battleships, to the northern squadron, Sydney, July 13.
During the year 557,600 bales of wool were sliippod from tho State, an increase of 75,000 over the preceding yoar. Melbourno, July 13.
Tho troopship Oriont lias arrived with 800 returned soldiers. Sho has 28 sick, mostly with measles. The Victorian portion marched to tho Exhibition Buildings, where Lord Ilopetoun presented war modals.
Perth, July 13. All the railway men have rcsumod work. Brisbane, July 13. Mr Airey, Labor member, has been returned unopposed for the vacancy for Flinders electorate.
Four new appointments—Messrs Carter, Moreton, Power, and Brown—have been mado to the Legislative Council. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Mr Ramsay, representing tho Oceanic Steamship Company, read a paper on tho advantages of tho direot mail service between Brisbane and San Francisco, by which mails would be delivered from London in 28 days. Queensland would be onabled to command a large share of the American trade. It was not the intention to offer the service to tho Government, but for tho people to consider whether it was worth while to follow the prospect up. In the event of Queensland deciding to have the service Brisbane would he the first and last port of call in Australia. Now Zealand would be dropped out altogether.
