HOCKEY.

[BV “BI'LLY.j A fine, bracing afternoon greeted the hockeyists yesterday afternoon in their return match, the eleven of the Ladies' Hockey Club v. five gentlemen. Some very good play on the part of the ladies was witnessed, but the gentlemen did not play nearly so good a combined game as last week. From the bully off, the live attacked strongly, but good defensive play on the part of Hisses Heaney and Buttaverted a score. After about ten minutes’ play, Buscke, by good following up, placed the ball between the posts. A second | score was secured later by Heaney, and from this to the end of the spell the ladies rallied, a lot of give and take play being experienced in the region of the gents’ goal, until good combined play between the halves and forwards enabled Miss McCredie to place first goal to the ladies’ credit. The spell ended : Gents, 2 goals; ladies, 1. In the second spell, the ladies showed up very well, keeping their opponents well on the defensive, and, but for the good work put in by Heaney in goal, who stopped a number of good shots, the gentler eleven would have given the five something to do to catch them. About ten minutes from time, Miss Sampson scored for the ladies, placing the game two goals each, and from this on the game was a hardjgo. Barton, however, placed another goal to the gents’ credit, thus leaving the latter winners by o goals to 2. The ladies, despite a number of hard knocks received through the hard hitting of their opponents, stuck to their guns gamely. Misses Heaney and Butt putting in some very sterling work in the back division. All the forwards played very well, some of the runs and passing work of Misses Bloomfield and McCredie being really good. Of the gents’ play, little can be said, their superior strength and speed alone enabling them to win. The ladies are now practising hard, in anticipation of their match with the Country Ladies’ Club, which is expected to take place in a fortnight's time.
