British Fleet.

THE MEDITERRANEAN SQUADRON

By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright London, July 4.

In reply to criticisms on the weak condition of the Mediterranean squadron, Mr Arnold Foster said it was impossible at present to reinforce it without weakening the Home station. When new battleships were available the Admiralty would strengthen the quality and number of the Mediterranean fleet.

Referring to the Mediterranean fleet, Mr Arnold Foster said that cruisers and destroyers were being materially increased. When built the Channel fleet ought to be regarded as an integral part of the Mediterranean squadron. In order to produce unity of action it was intended that those squadrons should perform manoeuvres together. The Times, commenting on the subject, states that it is evident the Admiralty think that the work of construction is not keeping pace with requirements.
