SERIOUS CHARGE.
ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO POISON ■V WIFE.

The hearing of the charge of attempted poisoning, against Emil Berger, was continued at the Police Court yesterday. I)r Janies Dalzult said that he was called on June Gth last to go to accused’s house. Mrs Berger was very weak. She told witness that her husband had been giving her medicine, which had a peculiar effect on her mouth and throat, and caused other effects on her system. From what she told him, witness formed the opinion that she was suffering from an overdose of acconite. A bottle was produced, and taken possession of by the police. Witness said to accused: “Your wife has been very ill. Have you given her anything V ” Accused answered, “No.” Witness then said: “Have you not given her any medicine ? ” Accused repliol: “Oh, yes; there’s a bottle on the shelf there.” A constable showed accused the bottle, and accused said, “ Yes, that bottle.” Accused was quite ready to admit giving the medicine, but ho did not want to say too much about it. He had not been formally accused at the time, but he knew the constable was there. At this stago, the case was adjourned till Tuesday.
