CAPITAL VALUE.

(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —Although sorry to be compelled to dispel the illusion on the part of certain sanguino individuals that the capital value of the Borough of Gisborne will not be far short of £400,000, as I have the Government valuation for 1901,1 quote same for general information : “ Capital Value of Gisborne.—Summary' : Total value (less deductions), £291,993; unimproved, £131,757.” The deductions consist of property exempt from rates being used for religious, educational, hospital, and Government purposes, and amount to £24,617, making a total of £316,610, which amount will be probably shown in the “Year Book” of 1901 as the capital value of the borough; but for all calculations for rating purposes you can onlytake the capital rating value as above, £291,993. —I am, etc., James W. Witty.
