AUCKLAND RACES.

NOTES AND ANTICIPATIONS,

(Special to Tijies.) Auckland, last night. Tho third day’s racing in connection with tho A.R.O. winter meeting will bo held at Ellcrslic to-morrow. Tho business commences with] tho Second Maiden Steeplechase, in which ton horsos arc engaged. Sudden appears to have improved with the racing ho has had, and many good judges consider that he may bo hard to disposo of, but I think that ho will hardly be equal to winning. I seo nothing to prefer to Rungareliu. There is a big field of twenty-two in tho Winter Welter, which makes that race look decidedly open. The five top weights aro all well. Crusoe’s friends are confident that if ho is got away with the others lie will run a capital race. On the work I havo scon I like St. Ursula and Bcddington, provided they get a decent track, and I fancy that if they should bo beaton it will bo by Dartmoor and Lady Zulu. This pair working at Ellorslic are as likely as any to bring about a surprise. Defender, who is trained at Papakura, may eilect a boil ovor. Dayntreo, tho best handicapped horse in the race, is hardly himself, or I should havo looked no further. To sum up, I look to St. Ursula, or his stable companion St. Potcr, to win this event.

A horso that has come on well lately is Dingo, and I shall not bo surprised to seo him troublesome in tho Winter Steeplechase whon the business end of the contest is reached. Plain Bill has done a few useful gallops during the week, and on a slow run race might bo equal to tho task of winning, but recent form points to Nor’west and Kaimate as the safest to commend, and I give my vote in favor of Kaimate. Hinau and Hairtrigger, in the probable absence of Dartmoor, arc those I like best in tho Handicap Hurdle Race, and they should finish in the ordor named. In tho Maiden Welter Handicap, I have no decided fancy, but Trcsham and Highlander are as likely as any to score. Natation reads best in the Hunters’ Steeplechase. Lady Avon and St. Peter are my fancies for tho Farewell Handicap.
