DISASTER TO COLONIALS.
Tiie cablegrams this morning convey information that will cause dismay to many an Australian home. Two hundred and fifty Victorians woro taken by surprise by the Boers, and apparently the whole number might have been annihilated. As it was, eighteen were killed and many wounded. The cablegram states that "the Victorians, who had become detached from the company, were surprised at 7.30 in the morning. This must, on the faco of it, bo an error for 1.30. It would surely be impossible to surprise the most careless corps in broad daylight. As it is there appears to have been criminal negligence somewhere. A company that had become detached should not be easily taken by surprise ; their predicament should have made them more than ordinarily careful. But the fact remains that there has been a grave disaster, and the heart of the people of this colony will go out in sympathy with those who will to-day be in deep mourning in Australia. It will be a sad Waterloo Day for them. The kindly words from the London Times will be gratefully appreciated by the sorrowing ones.
