The Chairman said that the landlord would have to be prepared for an order to re-build, as the Committee was not likely to grant a renewal without such a condition. Argyll Hotel.—Mr Lysnar, who appeared for applicant, said that improvements were to bo made immediately. As to the furniture, as the lease was nearly up, Mr Gault had allowed the furniture to go a little out of repair. The Chairman said that the furniture should be kept up to the standard at all ■ times. Mr Lysnar said be was explaining so that it might not be thought that Mr Gault was to blame. License granted on condition that the house should be re-built in accordance with the plans submitted. The Chairman said fowls should not bo kept about the hotel. Mr Lysnar said they would be removed. The Committee would not give any undertaking for an extension of time in regard to the new building. Masonic Hotel, Mr Nolan for applicant. Granted.
Ormond Hotel, granted, conditionally on improvements being made within two months. The Chairman intimated that within twclvo months a new building would bo required. Bridge Hotel, Mr Nolan for applicant. Granted ; improvements to be made. Te Puka, Mr Nolan for applicant. Granted.
Albion Club Hotel, Mr Nolan for applicant. Granted, conditionally on anothor bathroom being provided within a month. Rangatira Hotel.—Mr Nolan appeared for the licensee, and Mr Jones for the landlord.- It was pointed out that tlo lease had nearly expired, and it would bo hard to compel new furnishing now. The Chairman said that was the licensee’s concern. Sergeant Siddclls said that the house was a very important one, but was one of the worst furnished in the district. Application granted, conditionally on the recommendations being carried out. Wairoa Hotel.—The Chairman said he had personally inspected the hotel, of whicli he spoko highly.—Granted. Border Hotel ; Mr Jones. —Granted. Permission being given to re-name the hotel the Frasertown Hotel. Clyde Hotel, XVairoa. —Granted, the Chairman saying he had visited the hotel and could bear out the report.—Granted. Ferry Hotel; Wairoa. —Mr Jones for applicant.—Granted, conditionally on a new kitchen being built, stables erected, etc., within three months. Kosoland Hotel.—Granted. Gisborne Hotel; Mr Nolan for applicant. —Sergeant Siddells said that the record of the conviction was merely put on as a necessary formal matter.—Granted, conditionally on the house being re-built within six months.
Rose Hotel, Awauui; Mr L. Rees for applicant.—Mr Boyd wrote complaining that though lib had previously complained, a nuisance still existed at the house, the smell of rubbish and filth being so bad that he could not hayo his bedroom win, dow open on account of it. The Sergeant and two police officers reported that they could riot find any reason for the complaint. The Chairman said that if there was a nuisance the person complainingshould take proceedings. Mr Rees deprecated any notice being taken of letters sent in this way. The Chairman said ho was about to say that even if the complainant appeared in person, it was outside the function of Court to go into such a matter.
Kaiteratahi Hotel; Mr Jones. —Granted, conditionally that three additional stalls be provided in the stables, the floor thereof to be gravelled, and sanitary matters to be attended to. ACCOMMODATION HOUSES.
Tuparoa.—Mr Chrisp appeared for the applicant, and said that as far as he could make out from subsequent reports the defects had been remedied. Publican’s license to bo granted on condition that a ladder bo provided, furniture procured, and other improvements made. “If there is riot some improvement within the next twelve months,” said the Chairman, “ I for one will be in favor of the license being cancelled.”
Motu Hotel. —Granted, at same fee as last year. Murewai Hotel, Mr Jones for applicant. The Chairman asked if any of those making the statements were present to substantiate them. Sergeant Siddells said he had not contemplated raising any objection, and, therefore, had not felt justified in going to the expense of bringing in witnesses. Plans wore produced of a new house to be somewhat on the lines of the Bridge Hotel. In regard to the complaints, Mr Jones said it - was not fair that complaints should be brought in in ‘this way. He had evidence to show that the Native was not drunk, but had been insulted. So far from Mr Hackctt not interfering, he had taken the man away. As to the brothers fighting, the only fighting that the one apparently referred to had done had been fighting for his country in South Africa. He had gone with the Seventh Contingent. The other brother was not of a fighting disposition, and the brothers had not fought since boyhood. As to Mr Joblin’s complaint, he could bring evidence to show that that gentleman had often complimented the licensee. He went on to refer to the other statements, saying that lie had witnesses present to refute the
assertions made. The Chairman said that there being no objection, they did not wish to hear evidence. Mr Jones said that it was only fair that ho should give, an explanation on Mr Hackett’s behalf. The Chairman said that they could not test the statementsmow, but if complaints were made on oath in the future and were substantiated, a renewal would be refused. A publican’s license was granted on conpition that there was a new building, six stalled stables, etc. Marumaru Hotel. Granted. Pakarae Hotel. Mr Nolan appeared
for the applicant, and said that all the works had been done, or were in course of completion when timber arrived, excepting a drinking trough, which he urged was not necessary. The Committee, in granting the license, insisted on the improvements, license fee to be £2O. Tatapouri Hotel. —The Chairman said he wished it clearly understood that when the Committee made a condition they meant to insist in its being carried out. In this case a condition made at the last
meeting had not been carried out, and they intended to refuse to renew this license until the stables had been put into order. The application would therefore be adjourned until the 2Sth inst. “ And,” added the Chairman, addressing the licensee, Mr Bailey, “ You may consider yourself very lucky that we have not refused the license altogether—it would have served you right. You were told to build a stable and you have not done so.” Mr Bailey said he had put up a buggyshed which he thought would be sufficient. In reply to Mr Nolan, who said he was asking on behalf of the owners of the property, the Chairman said that the stable must have three stalls and a loose box ; if these improvements, were not made by the 2Sth, the license would be refused.
Kawakawa Hotel, Mr Nolan for applicant. Granted ; fee to bo increased from £% 10s to Ho. WHOLESALE LICENSES. _ George Malthewson, Common, Shelton and Co., Williams and Kettle. CONDITIONAL LICENSE.
Matawhero saleyard 20th June: Mr Aislabie applied that the fee be reduced by a half. Granted at same fee as usual, one pound. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs George Oman, W. B. Oman, Quinn, and Hogan. In all eases where provision had not already been made it was stipulated that a ladder must be provided for fire escape purposes, and it was stipulated that the pan system must be adopted instead of cesspits. At 5.20 the Committee adjourned the meeting until June 28th,
