THE FATE OF MR AYRES
By Telegraph—Press Association. ’• Auckland, last night. In connection with the finding of Mr Ayres’ body, tho surroundings indicated that ho discovered tho fire in time to allow the putting on of a portion of his clothing. It is believed that deceased, discovering tho fire, made his way in tho direction of the children’s and Miss lace’s quarters, in the hopo of effecting their rescue. The theory is roasdnable, as Mr Ayres was thoroughly acquainted with the building. He must have passed the means of escape, hoping to rescue others, and thus have fallen a victim to the smoke and flames.
At tho inquest on Fred. Ayres, life Turner, manager of the Bank of Australasia, identified the body. Mr Johnston, licensee of the Grand! Hotel, deposed that Ayres occupied a bedroom facing the street, with two windows, ono facing the balcony. Witness saw Ayres to his bedroom at IQ ! o’clock on the night of the fire.
