Nuhaka North Notes.

Good progress is being made with the bridge over Nuliaka river on Wairoa Mahia road, tho driving of the piles for the first two spans, being nearly completed. The Nuliaka river is still blocked at the mouth; all attempts to open it being frustrated by the heavy sea on tho beach. The Maoris have established a ferry at Stewarts’ crossing, and are reaping quite a harvest, tho charge ranging from 6d to Is for man and horse up to 2s 6d for buggy and pair. A vote of £3OO was voted last year for a bridge at this placo, the cost being estimated at over £2OOO. When

tho Minister for Lands and the Hon. James Carroll passed through this district, thoy recognised the want of a bridge at this placo, and promised a further vote for tho purpose. Tho river lias been blocked since the beginning of the month, and it is a great inconvenience to settlers, as dray traffic is completely blocked until

the river goes down. The roads in this part of the country are in very fair order for this time of tho year, owing, no doubt, to the long period of fine weather, and tho constant attention of our local surface man. The Wairoa County Council vote of £5, for tho Devils’ Elbow, has been spent in fascining, tho scrub growing alongside being utilized for fascines. The work is not of a permanent nature, and is a sample of the penny wise pound foolish plan of our County Council. Had this place been metalled during tho summer, the work would have been of a permanent nature, and would have required very little

maintenance during the winter. It is reported on good authority that Black Bros, have sold out to Mr McKain of Petone, but I believe negotiations are not concluded yet. Messrs Black Bros, were among tho first settlers to tako up land in this district, and Nuhaka Can ill afford to lose such good settlers.—(Own Correspondent).
