The Gisborne Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, MAY 30, 1901.

There arc somo persons of ill repute about Gisborne just now. The monthly meeting of the Harbor Board will be held this afternoon. The Elingamite had a largo number of passengers for Southern ports last evening.

The Hon. J. Carroll returned to Gi borne yesterday, but has still to keep his room.

A man named O'Brien was arrested yesterday by Constable McLeod on a charge of vagrancy. Captain Edwin reported—yesterday : “ Moderate to strong north to west and south-west winds; glass fall; ordinary tides.”

Bennett, late of the HuddartParker steamer Hygcia, is now second' engineer of the s.s. Elingamite, in place of Mr W. Wilson. The monthly meeting of the Wliataupoko Road Board will be held to-morrow afternoon. It will be the first meeting of the new Board. Mr J. M. Cuinming, the secretary, handed over to provisional trustees the sum of £75 raised on behalf of the widow Mrs Blair. Further subscription lists are yet to come in.

The quarterly summoned meeting of Turanganui Lodge, U.A.0.D., will be held in the Masonic Hall this evening, when some important Druidic business will bo transacted, including the nomination of officers, and discussion of the annual report of the Grand Lodge.

In this morning’s Times there is an excellent programme for the concert to be hold at Patutahi this evening, in aid of the funds of the Roman Catholic Church at Patutahi. A brake leaves tho Masonic corner at 6.80, and there should be a large attendance of townspeople as well as country residents. The following team will represent City against West End in the football match at Tucker’s paddock this afternoon:— Zachariah, Burns, Glennie, Coleman, Samson, Primrose, Quinn, King, Jones, Freer, Duggan, Davidson, Webb, Dixon, Steele. Emergencies: Courtayne, Kennedy, Craig. Players are requested to be on the ground at 8 o’clock sharp.

The success of the social gathering which the local Druids intend holding at Patutahi on Friday, June 7th, is now practically assured. In addition to those who intend journeying from town, a large number will also be present from Ormond, To Arai, and other parts of the district. Tho music will.be hi the capable hands of Mrs Fernandez, and Mrs Stevens, of Patutahi, having charge of the catering, a most enjoyable evening is anticipated. A brake will loave town at 6.15, the return faro being tho moderate charge of 2s.

In regard to the Gisborno-Karaka railway, Mr Carroll says that tho Minister for Public Works has informed him that the vote for this work is more overdrawn than that for any other line, but he has informed his colleague that it is no£ a question of incurring liability, but of getting tho work shoved along. Good progress will be made with the line beyond Ormond. With respect to roads, Mr Duncan is pushing them on, and has laid down tho principle that votes must be expended. Ho has divided his Department, giving the charge of road construction to Mr Hurstkouse.

The East Coast Mounted Bides are to bo represented at the reeoption to the Duke of York at Wellington by three officers (Captain Winter and Lieutenants Colebourne and Miller) and thirty men. The horses leave on Sunday, June 9th, being taken overland to Napier by Quarter-master-Sergeant H. Evans and a party of ten volunteers; thence they proceed to Wellington by train. The rest of the company go by steamer on Wednesday, June 12th. On Monday next those chosen for the trip will meet at the drillshed to secure their accoutrements. The horses arc all to be led, via Nnhaka. When the American mail steamer Sonoma passed through Auckland on her last voyage from Sydney to San Francisco, there were a number of stowaways on board, to whom the Auckland authorities refused permission to land, and they were taken on by the steamer to Pango Pango, where they wore landed and detained by the American authorities. The men were shipped on board of the Sic-rra on her arrival at the Samoan port, and reached Auckland on Monday, The authorities, upon being acquainted of the circumstances, had the men placed under lock and key on board, and they will 'be taken back to Sydney by the Sierra. A detachment of returned troopers paid Gisborne a visit yesterday on their way South. They left Capetown by the White j Star liner Sueric, and joined the Elingamite for Auckland at Sydney. Sergeant Sadd (Nelson) was in charge. The names are : New Zealand Mounted Biiles : Sergt. Sadd (invalided), Nelson; Troopers Hutchison (invalided), Gore ; J. Goldstone (invalided), Wannate ; W. S. Bovey (invalided), Nelson ; Goddard (invalided), Nelson ; B. Goldstone, Waimate ; McLean (invalided), Wanganui; Field (invalided), Nelson. New Zealand Bough Eiders: Troopers A. A. Kitchener’s Horse: Troopers Jones, Anderson, and Davidson.

It is stated that the Haiti Road Board, as a Board, is putting in objections to the liaiti valuations. The troopers passing through Gisborne last evening were entertained at dinner prior to then- going on by the steamer. A Wellington- cyclist, summoned for riding on the footpath, pleaded he had | only got on there to avoid some newlylaid metal. The case was, on that account, dismissed. At the reception of the troopers at Rangiora a bulldog of khaki colour belonging to someone in the crowd walked into the square in front of the men, and seated himself with an air of right to share in the honour being done to the other “ boys of the bulldog breed.” A female offender, who was lately charged at the Milton Court, Otago, with being drunk and disorderly, and having insufficient means of support, had quite a record of previous convictions, which numbered 37 since 1892. ' They included drunkenness (five convictions), vagrancy (two), two years for wounding, theft (three), and house-breaking. In order to cater for those who are unable to attend the football matches I played every' Saturday afternoon, the Rugby Union decided to have one of the senior fixtures of the first round played on a Thursday afternoon, and should the attendance warrant it the Union will continue to have one match in each round played on a Thursday. The first of these matches takes place this afternoon, when the West End and City teams will try 1 conclusions, and as the representatives of these districts are very evenly matched, those who attend can roly' on witnessing a very interesting game.
