A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest on James Weatherell, whose gun exploded while he was getting through a fence at Rangiora. The Winter Show was opened at two o’clock this afternoon. The formal opening by the Premier takes place to-night. The entries are large, especially in the horticultural section. Wanganui, last night. Obituary: Judge Robert Ward, oxNative Land Court Judge, aged 61. Deceased came to the colony 57 years ago with his father, the first Primitive Methodist missionary in the North Island. lie served in various capacities under the Government as Native Government Agent, Clerk, and Resident Magistrate, taking up his permanent residence in the lattercapacity at Wanganui in 1882, In 1889 he was- permanently appointed Judge of tho Native Land Court, which position he occupied till up to last year, when he was retired on a pension. During his terra of office as Native Land Court Judge he gave titles to over eight hundred thousand acres of land. Ho leaves a widow and family of nine, four sons and five daughters. Auckland, last night. The Harbor Board has approved of payment for the Chairman of the Harbor Board of a salary not excocding £2OO por annum. a Mr Witheford entertained the Admiral and officers of the warship Brooklyn at dinner, and at the opening performance of the American Opera Company, booking 127 seats. *;
