TEACHERS’ SALARIES.

Timaru, last night The Teachers’ Salaries Commission opened its sittings here this morning, and examined Mr Abel, Assistant-Secretary (the Secretary being absent indisposed), Mr Howell, Chairman of the Board, and the Rev. G. Barolay, a member. Mr Howell fully approved of the colonial scale. Mr Barclay gave a qualified approval, fearing future political pressure by the body of teachers on the Govornor-in-Gouncil. Both urged that tho allowance to Committees should bo increased. Mr Barclay strongly approved of a seventh standard being instituted. A new point brought out at the Salaries Commission this morning was that no provision had been made in the Secretary’s scale for pay during the temporary absence of teachers through illness. Mr Hogbon himself drew attention to tho omission, on a related question sug. gesting tho point.
