HOSPITAL BALL.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING | The Hospital Ball, held in Messrs Wilj liams and Kettle’s wool shed last evening, was an unqualified success. There was a large and representative attendance, upwards of a hundred and fifty couples being present. The building was most tastefully decorated for the occasion, and rcfieeted the greatest credit upon the committee who had charge of that part of the work. There was a great display of bunting, which was shown to much advantage, whilst the evergreens and flowers served to give a pleasing and picturesque ehect. Another attractive feature of the decorations was the large number of mirrors I hung at intervals round the room. The | floor was in splendid order, and excellent music was discoursed by the City Baud, whilst several extras were played by Mrs Fernandez (piano) and Mr Cullen (violin). The supper was in charge of a committee of ladies, to whom the greatest praise is due for the manner in which 'they attended to this most important department. The supper tables wore most artistically arranged, and the viands were of a most recherche order. A number of gentlemen assisted at the tables during the evening, and the arrangements with regard to seating the guests wore of so complete a nature that there was not the slightest over-crowding. Where everyone worked so willingly, it would be invidious to single out any particular ladies and (gentlemen as deserving of praise. We cannot, however, refrain from mentioning the services of Messrs T. A. Coleman and J. R. Little, the secretaries, as both these gentlemen were most assiduous in their efforts to promote the success of the function. The building was brilliantly lighted, the Gas Company having arrangements for the same in hand. There were over fifty incandescent lamps, the bracket-lights round the room having all beautifully-tinted shades. The last time a ball was held in the building, the place was considered well lighted, but last evening there were upwards of thirty additional lights. The lamps represented a light of 3,500 candle-power. For several days past, Mr Spence (Manager of the Gas Company) and Mr Arundel had been superintending the lighting arrangements, and the splendid success achieved last evening must have been a matter of satisfaction to those gentlemen. His Worship the Mayor and Mrs Townley were present during the evening. Considerable interest was manifested in the prize waltz competition. Of the large number uf entries only eight couples could bo got to face the music. The judges first reduced tlic number to five and then made a final selection, their choice being Mr and Mrs A. Sawyer, who were warmly applauded by the spectators when the decision of the judges was made known. The programme consisted of twenty-two dances and several extras, and most of the dancers remained to the close
