Sydney Labor Matters

SPREAD OF THE STRIKE. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright London, May 28. A circular from the Sydney Stevedores’ Association, dated March 14th, regarding labour in Sydney and the amount of wages paid to coal lumpers, has been published. The circular, which suggests that greater facilities should be afforded to British laborers and workmen to come to Sydney, has created a sensation. Many shipping agents are making enquiries in the matter to inform the New South Wales Agent-General. Sydney, May 24. A conference of representatives of the Iron Workers’ Union and masters, relative to the strike at Mort’s dock, failed to arrive at a decision. The men demand seven shillings a day, and no non-union-ists to be employed. There is a fear that the strike will spread.
