THE PIAKO BLOCK. By Telegraph—Press Association. Thames, last night. Some time back the local bodies urged upon the Minister of Lands tho advisability of purchasing a large area of land in tho Piako block for settlement purposes, when Mr Duncan visited the district. Now agents of tho Government are in the district arranging for the purchase of over nine thousand acres of land. If the land is drained and of good quality, it is expected that an impetus will be given to the settlement of Piako when the land is thrown open. THE DUKE AND THE “ KING.”
The Natives of this district, or a large number, were half-hearted in the matter of the Rotorua reception. They appeared inclined to back Mahuta, the “king.” On representation and explanations made to them by the Government representatives in charge of the Rotorua function, they have decided to take part. Largo quantities of shell fish are being boiled and packed in barrels. A FOOLISH GIRL. The girl Dufty, who attempted to commit suicide by eating matches, has been discharged, friends interesting themselves to watch over her.
