Teachers’ Salaries.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin,"last night. At tho Education Commission yesterday afternoon Mr Edgar Bastings, of Oamaru, spoke on behalf of the' North Otago branch of the Otago Education Institute.
Mr George McDonald, President of the Dunedin Branch, said ho wished to speak on the question of payment to teachers on a capitation basis. The .£4 capitation was not sufficient for Westland and some other Boards, and consequently the remaining Boards must have a certain amount deducted to make up for that district. The weaker districts should get an increased capitation. The Otago teachers would like to see the other teachers in the colony raised up to the Otago level. It was not fair to make payment on the average attendance. It should be a block vote. The Otago Institute favored tho centralisation of the inspectors. Miss Hooper, the next witness, opposed tho reduction of the salaries of infant mistresses, The female teachers, who were being fairly treated in scheme No. 1, were being much more fairly treated in scheme No. 2. Instead of suffering a decrease they were receiving an increase. In fact mistresses occupied as much responsibility as the first male assistant. The Commission will resume, and probably finish, their Dunedin sittings on Monday.
