Fire in a Coal-Mine.
DEPARTMENTAL REPLY.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, last night. With reference to a telegram from Greymouth that an attempt was to be made to extinguish tho fire in the Westport and Cardiff Coal Mine by cutting around tho scat of the fire, and flooding by water, the Mines Department know nothing of the matter. The fire is confined to a very small area at the out-crop, which is beyond the reach of available water. Moreover, tho Departmental officials assert that no good purpose could bo served by the adoption of such methods as given currency to in the telegram, nor would the Mines Department be justified in incurring the expense and risk to human life, which such a work would of necessity involve.
