FIRE AT GREYMOUTH.

ENGINE BREAKS DOAVN,

[By Telegraph—Press Association]. Qreymouth, last night. A tire broke out in Ashton’s Hotel, Richmond Quay, this morning at three o’clock. It had a good hold when discovered, and was an immense blaze before the Fire Brigade got at it, The fire was well under command, when the steam fire engine broke down. There was then blowing a strong breeze, and the flames again got the mastery, and spread to Flaherty’s boarding house, which is practically a wreck. The premises on the other side caught, and the fire completely destroyed Hildebrand and Rolling's butcher shop and curing and freezing establishment. Spreading on to the Imperial Hotel, it completely destroyed the upper storey of the hotel, and made an utter wreck of the premises. Ashfords Hotel and Altacham’s were burned to the ground. The estimated damage is about ten thousand pounds. The insurance has not vet been ascertained, Rasson’s large storc-s and. the Phoenix Fire Offices had a narrow escape, and suffered considerable loss through the hasty removal of stock, books, etc.

When the fire engine broke down the engines of the steamer Rosamond came to the rescue.
