STABBING A BARMAN,

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night. Thomas Brown, a seaman belonging to the American steamer Bechuann, has been arrested on a charge of stabbing Harry Burton, a barman. The latter alleges that Brown attempted to snatch a bottle of beer from him, and failing in this drew a knife and stabbed him in the shoulder. On the other hand, Brown alleges that he was returning to his ship when set upon by some men, who demanded his money. One of the men hit him in the face and knocked him down ; thereupon he drew a knife in self-defence and used it on his nearest assailant. Brown is regarded by his shipmates as an inoffensive man. Burton was removed to the hospital. His wounds are not serious.
