THE DUKE AT BALLARAT.

Ballarat was en fete for the visit of the Duke and Duchess. The journey was bl made in a special train, overy precaution being taken to render the journey safe. “ The streets were crowded. The Royal party were met at the station by the Mayor and the Hons. Barton and Pea- bl cock. They were immediately driven to Sturt street, where the Duke laid the ™ foundation-stone of a fine equestrian '} statue to be erected to the memory of the st soldiers killed in South Africa. The party '' afterwards proceeded to the Town Hall D Gardens, whore the Duke and Duchess planted trees, the school-children singing " the National Anthem. A visit was paid “* to the South Star Mine. The Royal paity were received by a guard of honor, composed of miners attired in white ” shirts and blue dungaree trousers. The " Duke was presented with a magnificent r casket containing specimens, wliilo the J Duchess was the recipient of a brooch 1 made of gold from the mine.
