This, of course, does not mean that the canoe display cannot be carried out, but it means that the Duke will not respond in any way, nor receive any address of welcome from the Maoris in Auckland. NO DEER STALKING. The Royal Party will be unable to accept Mr Reid’s invitation to visit Motutapu for a day’s deer stalking. FOREST NURSERY. A satisfactory report has been received bv the Minister for Justice regarding the progress of the forest nursery at Rotorua. The conduct of the prisoners is excellent. CHILDREN AND TOBACCO. The tobacco habit among the Maori children in the districts north of Auckland is on the increase. Mr Bloomfield, S.M. at the Bay of Islands, in his report to the Native Minister on the Maori census, states that it is deplorable to see the number of young boys, and girls who smoke cigarettes, and he expressed a hope that the Maori Councils set up under the Act of last session will suppress the practice with a firm hand. To-day, some of the Railway officials went for a trip up the line in one of the new corridor cars recently' imported from the States, in order to test its capabilities. These cars are of a very novel design, and should be greatly’ appreciated by’ the travelling public. THE EX-JUDGE.
