Mr Carroll, Minister for Native Affairs, j lias gone on a visit to Papawai in order to attend at the first meeting of tho Maori Council for the district. MR WARD’S SERVICES, ft is rumoured that the Hon. J. G. Ward has been offered and has accepted a knighthood in recognition of his services in introducing the penny postage system in connection.with the all British cable. It is understood that tho Premier and the rest of Mr Ward’s colleagues heartily recommend the conferring of the distinction. THE LATE CHIEF JUSTICE. I understand that Sir das. Prendcrgast, late Chief Justice of Now Zealand, will leave by the next outward San Francisco mail steamer on Monday for London, where he will represent this colony at tho conference to bo held on tho question of constituting a colonial committee of the Privy Council in connection with appeals.
