The Returning Troopers.
[By Telegraph—Press Association]. Dunedin, last night. The storm which in the morning prevented communication with the Tongariro, with the returning members of the contingent, abated somewhat as the day wore on. The Tutanekai, which had the rough of it, put in at Oamaru, fvherc the Premier and Mrs Seddon landed, and came on by train. On reaching Port Chalmers it was found to be impossible to go on board the Tongariro, and all idea of bringing her into port had to be abandoned for the day. It is hoped that the weather and sea will have moderated sufficiently to permit of her coming up the harbor in the morning, when the programme for the reception at Port Chalmers and Dunedin will be carried out.
The men for the North leave by special train on Thursday morning, stopping for ten minutes at Oamaru, about an hour at Timaru, and for a few minutes at Ashburton. Christchurch will be reached at 7 o’clock in the evening.
