SENSATIONAL CASE.
ALLEGED MANIPULATION OF TELEGRAMS. VICTIMISING A BOOKMAKER, (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. During the past week or two it has been freely rumoured that developments of a sensational character might be expected in connection with the local telegraph office, and further colour was given to these statements when it became known that an official who had for many years held a responsible position in the department had been suspended. It is now understood that he, with another person, will be' charged at the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday next with having manipulated a telegram with the object of defrauding a well-known bookmaking firm in Wellington. The offence is said to have been committed on the Riccarton racecourse at the last meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, and consisted of sending a telegram to bookmakers asking for a certain sum to be put on a horse which had just succeeded in winning a race, and antedating the telegram by half an hour.
