The ’Frisco mail will arrive from Auckland to-day by the Waikarc. Mr Duncan, Minister for Lands, left Wellington for Oamaru on Monday evening. Among the appropriations for railway works is the sum of £2923 for the Gis-borne-Ivaraka line. The monthly meeting of the Hospital Trustees will take place at the Hospital this evening. The racehorses Record Reign and Minerva were shipped to Sydney by the s.s. Mararoa from Auokland, on Sunday. Senior and junior members of the City Football Club are requested to attend practice in Tucker’s paddock every evening at half-past seven. The Ladies’ Committee who have the arrangements for the Hospital Ball in hand, will meet at the Borough Council Chambers at three o’clock to-morrow. Captain Edwin reported yesterday : “ West to south-west and south heavy gale soon ; glass rise fast ; tides high ; sea heavy on coast ; indications much rain and very cold woattrer.” A heavy squall crossed the plain shortly after four yesterday afternoon. Great preparations are being made for the Druids’ social, to bo held in the Academy of Music, on Thursday evening next, and the gathering promises to be a big success. The tickets have gone off very will, and the committee are arranging for a first-class programme. The catering will be in the hands of Mr J. Craig. We understand that arrangements are being made by the natives of this district with the Union Company for the steamer Hawea to take them to Auckland on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of- York. From Auckland the ,Hawea will return South and arrive here to take tho natives away about the 24th inst.
The bi-monthly consecration meeting of the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavor was hold in the Presbyterian schoolroom last evening, the Rev. J. G. Paterson occupying the Chau-, The subject for discussion was “Walking with Jesus,” on which the members gave passages of Scripture, and the consecration pJcdce was taken by those present. the County Council Chambers last evening, Mr Nolan in the chair. Reports from the various jub-committees were received and showed that the arrangements in connection with the ball were in a forward | state. The Lighting Committee reported that the lighting is being arranged for, and incandescent burners will be fitted throughout the building, which will produce a brilliant sight. The Space Committee meets this morning at Messrs Williams and Kettle’s shed. The next meeting of the committee will be held at the County Council Chambers on Tuesday evening next, at half-past seven. “ These native actions are a great deal of trouble and no pleasure," remarked His Honor Mr Justice Conolly yesterday. “ I am afraid, however, that I cannot [ stop these actions, although I should very much like to do so.” Mr Rees : “ The intention of my argument has been to show that there has been something substantial to try. Whatever way Your Honor may decide afterwards is another matter, but we should not be shut out of calling evidence and fighting on distinct points. Some of the Natives will distinctly state that they ; never sold the land, that they never received any money, and never knew they had partod with their land. We regret to announce the death of Master Daniel Joseph McConville, a son of Mr and Mrs McConville, of Kaiti, who. passed away at his parent’s residence yesterday, the cause of death being typhoid fever. The little fellow was just thirteen years of age, and was greatly beloved by all who knew him. He was for many years an altar boy at St. Mary’s Church, and as a mark of respect to his memory his companions are requested to attend at the church to-morrow afternoon for the purpose of attending the funeral, which is to take place at Makaraka, the Rev. Father O’Connor officiating at the grave. The Children of Mary -- are also invited to attend the funeral. Much sympathy is felt for Mr and .Mrs McConville and family in their gad-bereavement.
