A FIRE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) i Christchurch, last night. The residence, of Mr B. Meredith, M.H.R., at Stoke, was destroyed by fire on Saturday night.
RECRUITS FOR SOUTH AFRICA. Captain Hughes has received a cable from the military authorities at the Cape staling that Lord Kitchener' is arranging for the passages of the men recruited by Captain Hughes for Brabant’s Horse, and instructing him to see the Governor upon the matter. As a result of this messsage Captain Hughes left for Wellington this evening by the Rotorua. IRON MOULDERS’ DISPUTE. Taking of evidence in the iron moulders’ dispute concluded at the Arbitration Court to-day. Beaven, of Andrews and Beaven, agricultural implement makers, stated that if the local price of castings were raised on account of the higher wages of the men he would either have to cease making certain implements or import them. He said his business was suffering greatly by American importations, he having been compelled to stop manufacturing one line, as the imported article was cheaper. This dispute will be closed in the morning, and the butchers’ dispute will be called next.
