A BANK SWINDLED.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. A man named Dick has been arrested on a charge of having stolen 4)270, the property of the Bank of New Zealand. It is alleged that tho monoy was obtained by the alteration of figures after a cheque had been marked.
The details of the bank robbery are that a young man opened' an account at the Bank of New Zealand in the name of Marshall a month ago, giving an address which afterwards proved to be fictitious. On Tuesday he presented a cheque for 4)7 on the account, which then stood at £SO. After tho cheque had been marked he altered the figures to 4)270. The money was paid out by the teller in 4-10-notes. The man went to Newton branch to exchange five notes, and more notes were changed at tho branch of the National Bank. His demeanor attracted attention. A detective, accompanied by tho teller, went to Onehunga, and tho teller identified a passenger by the steamer as the person who changed the notes. The man was arrested, and gave the name of Walter Lock. He said he was a tea merchant, and had only had .£27 on him. He was remanded till Wednesday.
