MAORI CENSUS. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night. All the Maori census returns, with the exception of that for tho Thames district, have now reached tho Registrar-General. They show that the Maori population of the colony, apart from the Thames district, is about 35,000, an increase of 2000 as compared with 1896. It is expected that the full returns will show that there are fully 4000 Maoris in the colony-, or at least 1150« more than in 1896. RAILWAY ACCIDENT. A railway accidont occurred at Kakaramea to-day to the goods train'with empties and stock waggons. Thirteen waggons ran off the line and piled up in extricablo confusion. It will be some time before the line is clear. The through train stopped at Patea, and arrangemeuts have been made for transferring the passengers and mails.
