TE REINGA FALLS.

THE GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY. MR STEUART'S REPORT. The following is the report of Mr Steuart. of the firm of Steuart and Fenn, electrical engineers:— Auckland, April 29th, 1901. His Worship the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Gisborne. Gentlemen, —In accordance with your instructions, I have visited Gisborne and Te Reinga Falls, with a view of ascertaining probable demand for electricity for lighting and power purposes, and the feasibility of generating the power required at Te Reinga Falls, and transmitting the same to Gisborne. The present gas used amounts to over 12,000,000 cubic feet per annum. From general observations, I gather that if electricity is supplied at a rate at which it will compete favorably with gas, about 4,000 lamps of 16-candle power or their equivalent will be required, including those required for street lighting. If the charge per horse-power for electricity for power purposes were less than that at .which it could be generated by steam, there would be an immediate demand for 200 horse-power. With 4000 lamps connected to tho main, it would only be. necessary to provide power for 2000, as there would never be more than that number alight simultaneously. Tho power, however, may bo required day and night, and possibly Continued'on fourth page. .
