THE WOOL SALES. COMPETITION STRONG, BUT PRICES LOW. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, May 2. At tho wool sales Messrs Brixton and Ronald, Balmer and Company, and Jacomb and Son offored 12,071 bales of medium selection. There was a large attendance, and competition was strong for fine merinos, Continental buyers taking tho bulk. Prices were on a par with the closing rates of the March sales. Thero was fair competition for fine crossbreds,
the prices remaining unchanged. Low classes of crossbreds declined seven and a half per cent, Yorkshire manufacturers taking the bulk. Tho total wheat and flour afloat for tho United Kingdom is 3,700,000 quarters, and for the Continent 1,000,000. Shares arc unchanged. By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, last night. Messrs Nelson Bros, have received tho following cable from the Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company, London :—Frozen moat market—Prices still falling. Quotations : Best Canterbury 4d, Napier and North Island 3£d; lamb, first quality, 5 3-8 d ; second od.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following London cablegram, dated May Ist: “ The sales opened this day at the level of last sales for merino and fine crossbred, and at a decline of about 5 per cent, for coarse crossbred. Competition by both Home and foreign buyers is fairly active.”
