The last official table of casualties in the field force in South Africa up to the end cf February shows some lamentably large sets of statistics. Th<J total death roll since the commencement of the war is over 14,000 officers and men. The actual number who died in South Africa was 664 officers aud 13,137 men, no less than 204 officers and 8161 men dying of disease. Those killed in action totalled 338 officers and 3485 men, while 109 officers and 1139 men died of their wounds. Of the 40,000 odd men invalided homo, 287 died, nearly 2000 were discharged as unfit for further service, 941 are still in the hospital, and a large proportion of the remainder recovered and rejoined for duty,
