Auckland, Saturday. Weiss and Menunott have liad a final match here, 750 up, Weiss conceding his opponent 100. Memmott was an easy winner with a 341 majority in a brilliant game. Both left for Wellington to-day by the Houra.

John McGuire, a single man, died , at the Hospital under chloroform. He was suffering from a crushed knee. He was operated on by Drs Scott, Moir, and Adams.

Palmerston North, Saturday

At about noou to-day an elderly man named J. H. Freeman expired suddenly in the square. The deceased was an old identity of Palmerston North, and recently a borough employee in charge of the reserve. He was known to be in fail ing health

Feilding, Saturday. :Yt a meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce last evening it was decided to protest against the recent increase of fire insurance rates, and to ask the Chambers of Commerce Jin Taranaki and Wellington provincial districts to join in sending a deputation to wait on the Premier to urge that a State fire insurance department be established. Wellington, Saturday.

Mr J. G. Gow, travelling representative of the Commercial and Industries Department, left for Marlborough district this afternoon on his way South. He will meet the exporters and producers of the South Island for the purpose of gathering information and collecting samples in preparation for his visit to South Africa about a month hence. Mr Gow is hopeful of a considerable trade being built up between New Zealand and South Africa, more particularly in seeds. On his return from the South Island he will immediately go North. The Hons. Walker, Jcnkinsou, and Stevens, M’s.H.R., were passengers by tho Warrimoo for Sydney this afternoon on the way to the Federal celebrations. The Premier, who is on the West Coast, may follow by the Mokoia, leaving the Bluff on Tuesday. William John Randall was charged at the Police Court to-day with absenting himself without leave from the employment of W. Stevens, Christchurch, to whom he is apprenticed. He was remanded on bail to appear at Christchurch on Monday. Dunedin, Saturday. Census returns: Bosslyn 4632, an increase of 514 ; Maori Hill 1501, an increase of 68; Caversham 5266, an increase of 503; South Dunedin 5363, an increase of 771.
